Israeli group wants 'flytilla' activists put on trial

An Israeli group today called for the arrest and trial of hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists who are expected to arrive at Ben Gurion airport as part of a solidarity campaign this weekend.

Between Saturday evening and Sunday, hundreds of activists, mainly from European countries, are expected to land at Israel's main international airport as part of a campaign called "Welcome to Palestine." The visitors are expected to openly declare their intent to visit the West Bank. But Israel has vowed to prevent them from arriving.

Nitsana Darshan-Leitner of the Israel Law Centre, said she had asked Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein "to put an end" to the campaign, now in its third year.

"We are asking him to put them on trial," she told Israeli public radio.

"This is criminal activity... (which is) a breach of several laws in Israel including unauthorised assembly and crossing the border when they have been specifically told not to come here." In previous years activists have been held in custody pending deportation but not charged with any offence.

"Israel must put an end to this," Darshan-Leitner said, "They don't learn because they don't pay the price." Hundreds of Israeli police are to be deployed in and around the airport from Saturday night, and the security establishment has already approached foreign carriers in an attempt to prevent known activists from travelling, press reports said.

Representatives of all the airlines which fly to Israel were summoned to a meeting last week with senior police and defence officials, at which they were told that the activists would not be allowed in, Maariv newspaper reported on Wednesday.

"It was made clear to those present that every activist that arrived in Israel would be detained, and the airline would be held responsible for returning him at its own expense," it said.

Israel is also planning to hand the airlines a list of activists who are expected to arrive shortly before the planes are scheduled to take off from their points of origin, it said.

Most of the flights defined as "problematic" would not arrive at the main Ben Gurion terminal, but would be rerouted to another part of the airport where they would be "isolated so that the police officers can check the passengers prior to disembarkation," the paper said.

During the first "Welcome to Palestine" campaign in 2010, organisers said around 100 activists managed to get in without incident and travel to the West Bank, access to which is controlled by Israel.

But last year, Israel worked with airlines to prevent hundreds of activists from boarding planes bound for Ben Gurion, and detained and later deported others who managed to arrive.

French organisers of the planned event said on Wednesday they still plan to travel despite Israeli opposition.

The campaign's organisers in the West Bank say they want to publicise Israel's control of movement into and out of the Palestinian territory and to boost solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Turkey could seek NATO's help to deal with Syria

Turkey says it could seek NATO's help in case the Syrian troops violate its borders again.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told reporters late yesterday that "NATO has responsibilities to protect the Turkish border according to Article 5." He was referring to the article in the alliance's treaty stating that an attack against one NATO member shall be considered an attack against all members.
Syrian forces have opened fire across the Turkish border Monday, killing two people in a Turkish refugee camp near the border.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said today that Turkey, a NATO member, could seek help from the military alliance if there are future violations.

Does New 'The Dark Knight Rises' Poster Predict the End for Batman?

Of all the material yet released for the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises, the third and final installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman series, including the new CIA bulletins, the new poster is probably the thing that provokes the greatest degree of chills. The "smashed mask" imagery is a comic book hero staple, foreboding the possible demise of our unstoppable hero. Usually, things work out just fine for these caped crime fighters. But...this is Christopher Nolan. So...I'm actually not too sure that Bruce Wayne is going to survive this movie. It's kind of shocking to think about a Batman movie wherein Batman dies, but if anyone's going to make one, it's Nolan and Christian Bale.

Hovering over the remains of what is plausibly a deceased Wayne is the third movie's central villain, Bane (Tom Hardy). Now, it might all be just a clever scheme to hook the three people out there who aren't already obsessed with The Dark Knight Rises. But we can't rule anything out, here. Nothing is a given. No one is safe. Batman

'Dexter' and 'Homeland' Return Dates Announced

The sixth season of Dexter, while not quite up to par with its heyday, was definitely a step up from the previous fifth season—complete with a pretty colossal finale. Even more of a winner than Dexter in 2011 was Showtime’s newest drama, Homeland, which stars Claire Danes as a mentally unbalanced federal agent striving to prove that a rescued American POW has been brainwashed and is working for a terrorist organization. Both are high-stakes, compelling programs that definitely leave a hefty void between seasons—but now, at least we know when they’ll return: September 30.

Dexter will return to Showtime with its seventh season (its second to last, according to the showrunner’s endgame plan) on Sept. 30. Along with Dexter’s season premiere, Homeland will return to the network for a second—and highly anticipated—season. This gives plenty of time for those not caught up on either show to finally get in the game (seriously, what have you been waiting for?) on two of television's best dramas.

'The Hunger Games' Advanced Screenings Opening in 24 Cities!

For most of us, The Hunger Games is only twenty-four days away (opening nationally on March 23). For a large sum of that group, this is far too long a wait. And for the members of that category willing to do something about it, there is the wonderful gift known as the Advanced Screening.
Lionsgate is announcing a contest to determine the locations of 24 Advanced Hunger Games Screenings. Starting tomorrow, March 1, fans are being asked to visit The Hunger Games website and search for their desired city’s designated Twitter tag. Then, fans should take to Twitter and tweet said code. Each day, the four cities with the highest volumes of Tweets will be announced for Hunger Games Advanced Screenings, giving residents (or willing travelers) a chance to win tickets.
Barnes & Noble is also giving fans a chance to win tickets to an Advanced Hunger Games Screening. On March 10, the first customers to purchase a NOOK device at participating Barnes & Noble stores will receive two free tickets to the official Advance Screening on March 21.
This isn't the only fun Hunger Games event going on these days. You can also win tickets to the Los Angeles premiere, or have a chance to meet the stars of the movie!
So the only question is…are you hungry enough to win this game?

'Two and a Half Men': Charlie's Back...As Kathy Bates?

Ever since Ashton Kutcher started on Two and a Half Men at the beginning of the Season Nine, fans nationwide have been clamoring for the show to bring back Charlie Harper (Charlie Sheen). Two and a Half Men has finally decided to grant its fans their one wish: Charlie is coming back. One small thing: he's Kathy Bates now. But be honest, you probably wouldn't have noticed if someone didn't tell you.

In a development that you'll have to read three times to fully understand, Two and a Half Men has hired Kathy Bates to play the ghost of Charlie Harper. In an upcoming episode, Charlie's brother Alan (Jon Cryer) will suffer a heart attack, and will be visited by Charlie's ghost—Charlie's older, female ghost—while recuperating at the hospital.

Lots of questions come to mind. How will this be explained? Will Bates be a welcome replacement for Kutcher? Will bowling shirts will still be attire of choice?

In other Two and a Half Men news that seems like it has to be a joke, Ashton Kutcher is going to space.

Turkish student dies from heart attack right before examination

Turkish high school student Damla Orhan died from a heart attack today right before leaving home to sit the University Entrance Exam (YGS) in the Black Sea province of Samsun, daily Hürriyet reported.

Orhan, 18, fainted after she woke up in the morning to prepare for the YGS. Her parents immediately took her to the hospital, where it was revealed that she had suffered a heart attack. Orhan was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

"She had been anxious for the exam for over a year,” a relative said. “Her family tried not to make her feel like she was under any pressure. She was self-conscious. The stress was too much for her and she could not deal with it.”

The exact cause of her death will be determined after an autopsy.

French intel blacklists Turkish group

A French intelligence agency has prepared a report on a rally of the Turkish associations protesting an Armenian “genocide” bill and blacklisted some participant groups, ntvmsnbc news website reported on March 30.

The French Central Directorate of Interior Intelligence (DCRI) blacklisted a group called the “French Turk Federation,” affiliated to Turkish opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), according to French “Le point” magazine. The federation also attended the rally in Paris on Jan. 21, to protest against the French bill penalizing denial of the Armenian genocide allegations. The bill was later annulled as unconstitutional by France’s high court.

The French Turk Federation is reportedly described by the agency as “an apparent face of the ultranationalist Grey Wolves which has from time to time resorted to violence.”
